GForest is an interactive climate technology platform embedded within the GCash app, empowering users to rebuild Philippine forests by opting for digital transactions that reduce their carbon footprint. Since its inception in 2019, GForest has facilitated the planting of over 2.5 million trees across strategic sites in the country, thanks to its partnership with local organizations.
Getting started with GForest is straightforward. users need to open the GCash app and tap on the GForest feature. By performing digital transactions such as Send Money, Buy Load, and Pay Bills, users earn green energy points. These points are equivalent to the total carbon reduced through cashless transactions, making every transaction an environmentally conscious choice.
Linking physical activity with GForest is another way to accumulate green energy points. Depending on the device (Android or iOS), users can go to Settings, tap on Apps > Manage Apps, select GCash, choose App Permissions, and allow Physical Activity. This integration encourages a healthier lifestyle while simultaneously supporting reforestation efforts.
Collecting green energy points is a simple process. Users can tap the floating energy bubbles on their GForest homepage or collect energy from friends by tapping on their names in the GForest dashboard. It's important to note that uncollected energy bubbles disappear after 72 hours, so users are encouraged to check the app regularly, especially during peak hours like 6:00 AM-7:00 AM and 11:00 PM-12:00 MN.
Once users have accumulated enough green energy points, they can plant a virtual tree within the app. For every virtual tree planted, GCash and its partners will plant an actual tree in one of the designated planting sites. Users can even track the progress of their tree planting by tapping on the Locations feature on the GForest homepage.
GForest's impact is amplified through its partnerships with organizations such as Kabang Kalikasan ng Pilipinas Foundation, Inc. (WWF-Philippines), Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), Ayala Land Inc. (ALI), Friends of Hope Inc. (HOPE), Century Pacific Food Inc. (Century), Philippine Coffee Board Inc., WWF, and Culion Foundation. These foundations work directly with local farming communities to plant and monitor the seedlings, ensuring a sustainable and community-driven approach to reforestation.
In case of any issues, such as not receiving energy points after a transaction, users can verify the success of their transaction through the Transaction History or GCash App Inbox. If the issue persists, users can file a report after waiting for 24 hours post-transaction for the energy points to reflect.
GForest represents a groundbreaking initiative in the Philippine third-party payment industry, demonstrating how technology can harness the power of individual actions for collective environmental benefit. As users embrace digital transactions, they not only enjoy the convenience of cashless payments but also actively participate in shaping a greener and more sustainable future for the Philippines.
